More Shipping Lines Announce Boycott Of Suez Canal, Red Sea
Yinka Olajoyetan, Lagos
With the latest announcement from HMM, the majority of the world’s leading liner shipping companies have now dropped shipping in the Red Sea, where Houthi rebels are attacking merchant ships.
This is clear after the largest container shipping companies have announced since Thursday that they will stop sailing through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
First, A.P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd AG stopped sending ships through the waters where the Bab-El-Mandeb Strait leads to the Suez Canal after attacks on the two shipping companies’ vessels on Thursday and Friday respectively.
Over the weekend, similar announcements were made by CMA CGM and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. OOCL has announced that “due to operational issues”, the company will stop shipping to and from Israel. However, it is not clear whether the Chinese carrier will stop sailing through the Red Sea.
