Maritime Journalists Tour APM Terminals, Apapa, Lauds Terminal Innovation
Fred Omotara, Lagos
Selected maritime journalists on Tuesday were taken on a tour of Nigeria’s largest container terminal, APM Terminals Apapa. This is even as the journalists saw first-hand the massive investment of Mobile Harbour Cranes, Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes and Crane simulator room inside the Apapa container terminal.
Aside the Crane Simulator room which is the first of it’s kind in Nigeria’s maritime sector, the terminal operator also boasts of a collection of 30 RTG’s and a number of Mobile Harbour Cranes to ensure seamless cargo clearance procedure.
The terminal operator during the tour showcased its automated stacking system, stating that locating any container inside tbe port terminal is just a button away via the terminal computerized system.
“Location of all the containers inside APM Terminals is just a button away. Every container is located through our computerized system. When we need a container, the container number is typed into the container stacking system, and the location of such container is displayed.
“The trucker is then notified and asked to go to the location to pick up the container,” a terminal worker told newsmen during the tour.
The journalists were also taken round the laundry section and staff building built for the terminal workers.
The journalists who lauded the terminal operator urged the management of APM Terminals to improve on its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with the media.
In the words of the Maritime Editor, Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Godwin Oritshe, “APM Terminals, Apapa can equip maritime journalists with necessary working tools like laptops, midgets etc to help us improve our reportage.”
