Maritime Academy Alumni Says Gender Bias Is Major Challenge For Female Seafarers

A graduate of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Akwa Ibom State, Audu Beatrice Ojonile has revealed that gender bias remains the biggest challenge confronting female seafaring in Nigeria.
Disclosing this in a post on LinkedIn, the 2nd Mate onboard a Platform Supply Vessell urged new female seafarers to remain focused on their goals if they must achieve greatness on the job.
“My name is Audu Beatrice Ojonile, I am a 2nd Mate onboard a Platform Supply Vessell (PSV). I am a graduate of Nautical Science from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron.
“My inspiration was the fact that seafaring wasn’t a common career that women ventures into.
“As at the time I got to know about it, I had always wanted something out of the usual while growing up as a child.
“The major challenge for female Seafarers is gender biasing.
“To the “newbies”, there is no limitation to what you can achieve except the one you allow in your mind.
“Always remember your maker and stay focused. Set your mind on your goals and you will achieve greatness,” the MAN Oron Alumni stated.
